Chapter 9

Everly

“Mrs. Adams,” Everly started to reply to Grey’s mother, cutting across him.

It certainly wasn’t conventional and marrying for convenience may not have been favored in the eyes of God, but surely Marianne could understand the direness of the situation. The right words tangled in her mouth. How to explain?

Marianne’s nostrils flared, silencing Everly. She focused on her son as though wanting to hear the truth from him.

Grey said, “No. We’re not married, Mom.” He didn’t meet his mother’s eyes or Everly’s. His shoulders sagged slightly. She’d never seen him in any posture other than commanding. A presence that couldn’t be ignored, but right then it appeared as if he wanted to disappear.

He took a few more steps away from the church as though trying to distance himself from the sin of the lie. “Come on, we don’t want them to eat all the pie. It’s been ages since I’ve been in Mrs. Kane’s kitchen.”

Marianne caught up.

Everly walked a few steps apart from them. The heavy weight of deceit slowed her down. Why did he lie? She didn’t take Grey to be the kind of person to do something like that, especially to his own mother.

“You’re not married, but you have a ring on your ring finger. Pie or not, I want an explanation,” Marianne said.

Grey cleared his throat but his voice was thick when he spoke. “There’s nothing to explain really. Um, this ring is a football thing. You know me, married to the game.” He laughed it off. “And, uh, Everly wears her grandmother’s ring. She’s very sentimental.”

Everly had never even met either of her grandmothers. Her paternal grandmother passed away from old age before she was born and her mother’s mother died during childbirth.

Still a few paces behind Grey and his mom, she held out her hand, gazing at the ring. She probably shouldn’t have worn it. The band was thin and nondescript. There was no engagement ring. Compared to the rock Jeffrey had given her, it was easy to forget the gold band. Jeffrey had insisted she flaunt it if only to display the fact that he was wealthy enough to afford something so big as well as announce to the world that he was marrying the Nelson Metal magnate’s daughter. He probably believed that gave him an advantage in his business dealings and so his associates stayed on his good side.

Why was Grey wearing the ring? He’d never done so before. Perhaps he’d left it at the cabin and found it when they’d arrived.

In her heart, Everly valued marriage. It was a sacred covenant and a lie to deny that she’d said I do to Grey even though the circumstances didn’t involve love. No, they involved gratitude. She was so deeply grateful to the stranger who’d offered his health insurance, likely saving her life. Because she was acting fast to prevent disease in the future, she’d pledge her life to him as a way of saying thanks. Wearing the ring was a reminder of what he’d done for her.
